Shore Thing Fishing Report: Speck-tacular catches out there right now

The near shore reefs along Hancock and Harrison County have been full of fish, particularly speckled trout. Thus far, May has been nothing short of "Speck"-tacular!!! The salinity and temperatures have brought in a huge amount of shrimp, pogies, mullet and speckled trout.

Youngsters' fishing day in Gresham offers tackle and trout

The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife will host a youth fishing event at the pond from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Kids younger than 12 don't need a fishing license, required at a lower cost than adult licenses of those between 12 and 17. Licenses aren't available at the pond. Volunteers and department staff, however, will hand out rods, reels, tackle and bait to those who need it and help teach youngsters how to catch trout.

Ken Perrotte: Hunting symposium struggles with how to solve declining numbers

IN AN EVENT that sounds like it had all the trappings of a nationwide pep rally to support recruiting, retaining and reactivating hunters and recreational shooters, 325 representatives from conservation groups, trade associations and governmental agencies met in Lincoln, Neb., this week for the first-ever R3 Symposium. On Tuesday, leaders from the Council to Advance Hunting and the Shooting Sports, Archery Trade Association, National Shooting Sports Foundation, Association of Fish and Wildlife Agencies and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service signed a Memorandum of Understanding related to the issue.

Finding Exploitable Ledges Was Critical

Some high finishes were turned in at the Kentucky Lake FLW Tour by anglers who fished the shallow bushes, but the big money was made on the venue's famed offshore ledges. Jason Lambert caught more combined weight over the first 3 days than anyone else did in 4, but it still took a solid 18-pound average to crack the top 5. Among the 2nd- through 5th-place competitors were three guys who many observers had tabbed as pre-tournament favorites considering their ledge-fishing prowess and past success at the lake.

3 State Records Broken in Minnesota

The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources reported new records for lake sturgeon , golden redhorse and silver redhorse. Jack Burke, fishing on Rainy Mountain in Koochiching County May 4 with buddy Michael Orgas, set the catch-and-release record for lake sturgeon .
